Like all Luftwaffe pilots, Gerhard Thyben flew operationally almost without a break after qualifying in 1941. Between joining 6,/JG3 on the Eastern Front and the end of the war he flew 385 operational missions.
Gerhard Thyben’s first air victory was in early 1943 on the Eastern Front when he downed a Douglas Boston. His score rose rapidly and on a single day in May he shot down a Spitfire and a P-39 Airacobra while flying with JG3. After a spell in the West based at Amsterdam when he shot down three P-38 Lightnings in a single combat, he returned to join JG 54 flying the Fw190 in the East. By the war’s end his total had risen to 156.
