Flying their P-38's at sea level with only the aid of their airspeed
indicator, wrist watch and borrowed navy compass, Col. John Mitchell
and his men of the 339th Fighter Squadron return victorious after
shooting down the head of the Japanese Combined Fleet, Admiral
Isoroku Yamamoto.
Much controversy still surrounds this famous mission to this
day, regarding who actually made the kill on that 18th day of
April, 1943.
Signed by: Col. John Mitchell, Rex Barber, George Chandler, and
Bill Harris. |
