As the sun sets across the war torn countryside of northern
France, British Sopwith Camels return to their base from another
sortie, passing above the heads of allied infantrymen, symbolically
heralding the end of one era and the beginning of another. Among
the flying machines that helped to usher in this new age, the
Camel is undoubtedly Sopwith's best known design and, credited
with 1,294 allied aerial victories, arguably the best British
scout aircraft of the First World War.
