Tuskegee Contrails

by Stan Stokes

On March 24, 1945, 31 B-17s of the 463rd Bombardment Group flew a mission from their base in Italy, to the Daimler-Benz Tank Works in Berlin and back (1,800 miles). The 332nd FG was assigned the escort mission for most of the way, however when the relief FG failed to show, the 332nd continued to escort the B-17s all the way to the target. While over the target, they were attacked by Me262 jets. In was unknown how to deal with the jets at 100 MPH faster than the 332nds P-51s, but within just a few minutes, Lt. Roscoe Brown and Flt. Officer Charles Brantley each shot down a jet. The rest of the jets scattered. For their actions the 463rd BG and the 332nd FG were awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation.
