The USS Hornet loaded with 16 B-25s (all that could be
shipped) which would strike the Japanese mainland in the Halsey-Doolittle
Raid steams westward as part of Vice Admiral Halseys
Task Force 16. The air-cap being provided by the USS Enterprise.
This, the sixth and possibly final release of Phillips
series on the raid, is intended to pay homage the Navys
role in the legendary raid on Japan. Sending two of the United
States aircraft carriers to the coast of Japan in 1942
was a risk of the highest order for a fleet, and a nation, still
reeling from the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.
The print was countersigned by four of the surviving members
of Doolittles Raiders attending the 68th Reunion at Wright
Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH this April. |
