Toward the Setting Sun

by William S. Phillips

The USS Hornet loaded with 16 B-25s (all that could be shipped) which would strike the Japanese mainland in the “Halsey-Doolittle Raid” steams westward as part of Vice Admiral Halsey’s Task Force 16. The air-cap being provided by the USS Enterprise.

This, the sixth and possibly final release of Phillips’ series on the raid, is intended to pay homage to the Navy’s role in the legendary raid on Japan. Sending two of the United State’s aircraft carriers to the coast of Japan in 1942 was a risk of the highest order for a fleet, and a nation, still reeling from the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

The print is signed by four of the Doolittle Raiders
Col. Richard E. Cole - Lt. Col. Robert L. Hite - Major Thomas C. Griffin - Sgt David J. Thatcher
