P-40 E Warhawks of the 343rd Fighter Group begin their dive into a formation of Japanese Mitsubishi GM3 “Nell” bombers and Mitsubishi “Zero” fighters headed for a bombing raid on Dutch Harbor, Alaska. War in the Aleutian Islands came with the additional hardship of severe weather conditions, particularly for air operations. Storms and heavy fog could appear suddenly and being being shot down didn’t necessarily mean survival. Finding a downed pilot could be dangerous and the climate on land and at sea lessened the pilot’s chances of being rescued in time.
