P-38 Lightnings of the 347th FG, led by Maj. John Mitchell
skim the waves as they approach the island of Bougainville, and
the planned interception of Admiral Yamamoto's transport plane.
After a gruelling 415 mile flight at an altitude of just fifty
feet, the P-38 pilots were, almost miraculously, sucessfull in
intercepting and downing Yamamoto's aircraft. - Signed by four
of the Yamamoto mission's lead pilots.
