Scorpion Three

by Mike Machat

Serving as one of three dedicated flight test development aircraft, this steel-gray F-117 was assigned to the "Baja Scorpions" Test Squadron appropriately named for the deadly desert predator. A stunning example of the first generation of stealth technology, the subsonic F-117 saw first combat during Operation Desert Storm in 1990, but never took a single hit from formidable anti-aircraft defenses during that entire campaign. The F-117's service life was relatively short for an Air Force fighter, being replaced by today's Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor.
