Major Fred F. Ohr flew the P-51 Mustang Marie
(4-413298) while assigned to the 2nd Fighter Squadron, 52nd Fighter
Group, 15th USAAF, Mediterranean Theater of Operation. He joined
the 2nd Squadron in Sicily, July, 1943. The famous 2nd Fighter
Squadron was known as the American Beagle Squadron.
When he joined the 52nd Fighter group, he began flying the British
Supermarine Spitfire, and on April 9, 1943, while on a mission
over Tunisia, he shot down a Junkers JU-88 bomber, which was
his only victory while flying the Spitfire. In April May
1944, the 52nd Fighter Group converted from the Spitfire to the
P-51 Mustang. Major Ohr scored five air-to-air victories while
flying the P-51 Mustang, bringing his overall total to 6 victories,
making him an Ace. Major Fred Ohr is the only American Ace of
Korean ancestry. He flew more than 150 combat missions, and was
awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses, two Silver Stars, the
Bronze Star, and many other medals and decorations.
From covering the early landings in North Africa in November
1942, till the German surrender in May 1945, the 52nd Squadrons
scored 425.33 confirmed aerial victories, plus 35 probables,
137 damaged, and pinned down and destroyed countless enemy resources
on the ground. The 52nd Fighter Group was awarded two Distinguished
Unit Citations, one for a mission to Germany on June 9, 1944,
and the second for a mission to Rumania on August 31, 1944. |
