A byproduct of the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989, was
the reorganisation and downsizing of the U.S. military. One such
event took place April 10, 1996 which formally marked the day
when the 1st Infantry Division headquarters returned to Europe,
sending the 3rd Infantry Div. back to Ft. Stewart, GA. The ceremony
itself took place in front of the Wurzburg Resident, one of the
most historic buildings in Germany. The location provided a fitting
place for the exchange of the division colours of two of the
most historic units in the United States Army. Signed by the
