The Katzenjammer Kid

Capt. Urban “Ben” Drew flew the P-51 Mustang "Detroit Miss" (44-14164) when he was assigned to the 375th Fighter Squadron, 361st Fighter Group, 8th USAAF in Europe. He had 6 air-to-air victories and 1 ground victory. He flew 75 combat missions, and on September 18, 1944, he shot down a Heinkel 111, and then helped destroy Germany’s largest seaplane, the Blohm and Voss BV-238. On October 7, 1944, he became one of only two pilots to shoot down two German Luftwaffe ME 262 jets during a single mission. He was awarded 2 Distinguished Flying Crosses, 14 Air Medals, and is one of only two men to receive the United States Air Force Cross for combat actions performed in World War II. While stationed with the 361st Fighter Group, Urban “Ben” Drew and fellow pilot Billy Kemp became known as “The Katzenjammer Kids”.

The 361st Fighter Group, known as the “Yellowjackets”, was stationed at Little Walden, England, and consisted of the 374th, 375th, and 376th Fighter Squadrons. The 361st had 226 air-to-air victories and 105 air-to-ground victories. The three squadron logos and 361st Fighter Group are depicted on the print.
