A Lancaster of 617 squadron on it's homeward leg, having just
completed it's attack on the Möhne dam during the night
of 16th/17th May 1943, is seen flying at a daringly low altitude
in the hopes of avoiding radar detection. As she passes, distant
searchlight batteries scour the sky in vain. The roar of four
Merlin engines shakes the timbers of an old windmill and arouses
the occupants, who may never know what momentous event this aircraft
and crew have participated in.
Signed by six crew members who flew on the dams raid;
Sgt. Ray Grayston (Flight engineer) - Flt. lt. Edward Johnson
(Bomb-aimer)
Sqd. ldr. George Johnson (Bomb-aimer) - Flt. Sgt. Grant McDonald
(Rear gunner)
Flying Officer Dave Rodger (Rear Gunner) - Sgt. Frederick Sutherland
(Front gunner). |
