April 21, 1944. Flying his Hellcat
of when VF-16 from the USS Lexington, second section leader Francis
M. Fleming spotted an Imperial Japanese Army Mitsubishi KI-21
"Sally" Bomber flying along the edge of a dense ground-fog
layer. He attacked at a high closure rate, destroying the target
in one pass - close to the shore of Lake Sentani. Fleming completed
his tour aboard Lexington with 7.5 confirmed aerial victories.
