First Pass - Defenders Over Washington
by Rick Herter

On the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, Capt. Dean Eckmann of the 119th Fighter Wing, North Dakota Air National Guard, was on duty at the unit’s alert Detachment at Langley AFB in Virginia. Captain Eckmann flying the lead aircraft along with wing men Major Brad Derrig and Capt. Craig Borgstrom responded to the first scramble order to Washington DC. Here Capt. Eckmann’s F-16 is seen as he arrives over the nation’s capital and makes his initial high speed pass over the Pentagon at 900 feet. In the background such Washington landmarks as the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, the Washington Monument, the Capital and the White House are visible. Signed by Dean Eckmann - Craig Borgstrom.
