Like Father, Like Son

Captain Clinton D. Burdick flew the P-51 Mustang “DoDo” (44-15310), when he was assigned to the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, 8th USAAF in Europe, stationed at Martlesham Heath, England. He was one of only five aerial Aces with the 356th Fighter Group, having scored 5.5 victories, all against the German Luftwaffe FW-190. His first victory came on November 25, 1944, and his last was on January 14, 1945. He flew 53 combat missions, with his last mission flown on February 20, 1945. He was also the wingman for Donald Strait, who with 13.5 aerial victories, was the leader of the 356th Fighter Group. After the war, Clinton Burdick attended MIT, where he got his bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering.

Clinton's father, Lt. Howard Burdick flew the Sopwith Camel when he was assigned to the 17th Pursuit Squadron, and flew combat missions as part of the British 65th Wing. He was an Ace in World War I with 8 air-to-air victories. His first victory was on September 18, 1918, and his last victory was on October 25, 1918. He flew nearly 200 hours in World War 1, and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and he Distinguished Flying Cross.

Like Father, Like Son, they are the only known pair of father and son Aces in history.
