In early 1942, a lone B-17E of the 19th BG on a reconnaisance
mission near Bougainville is forced down to the deck by weather.
Emerging from the overcast, pilot John Fields, navigator Hulet
Hornbeck and crew found themselves flying directly down the centreline
of a Japanese warship, which immediately opened fire.
Signed by Fields, Hornbeck and ten other inductees into the American
Combat Airman Hall of Fame, including 'Bud' Anderson. |
