Born in 1874, Winston Churchill became first an army officer,
then a war correspondent covering the Boer War, before entering
politics as an MP in 1900. After holding the posts of Home Secretary
and First Lord of the Admiralty, he served on the Western front
in WWI. On 10 May 1940, King George VI appointed Churchill Prime
Minister following Chamberlains resignation. A brilliant
orator, his stirring and inspirational speeches in the dark days
of 1940 and 1941 became a source of strength, not only to his
country, but to the whole of the free world, as Britain stood
alone against Nazi Germany. |
