On April 7th 1945 P-51s of the 15th Fighter Group, 78th
Fighter Squadron (The Bushmasters) escorted B-29s over
Japan. Led by Col. Jim Vandehey, the 78th fighter squadron became
the first land-based American fighters to fly over Japan during
WWII. Bushmasters On Guard depicts Major James B.
Tapp and the 78th Fighter Squadron providing cover for B-29s
over Japan in the Spring of 1945. Signed by eight pilots and
one ground crewman from the 78th Fighter Squadron. General Jim
