The Battle for New Years Day

In the early morning of January 1st. 1945, the Germans launched Operation Bodenplatte, an all out attack on allied airfields in France Belgium and Holland, in an attempt to weaken the British and American fighter forces. Shown here is Captain ‘Whiz’ Whisner In his Mustang ‘Moonbeam McSwine’ as he leads Red Section of the 487th FS 352nd FG into the defence of their airfield at Asch, Belgium. Twenty three German fighters of JG11 were shot down by the 352nd early on this morning, four of which were credited to Whisner. The American response to the German attack was so rapid and successful that the 487th was subsequently awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation. - Each print is signed by six pilots of the 352nd Fighter Group.
