The American Dambuster

by Mark Postlethwaite

Chastise, 16/17th May 1943. Bomb aimer George Johnson drops his Upkeep mine on the Sorpe Dam as American pilot Joe McCarthy pulls the Lancaster ED825 up into a climbing turn to avoid the hills ahead of them. Operation Chastise, 16/17th May 1943.

Researched over many months with the assistance of 'Johnny' Johnson one of the last survivors of the Dambuster Raid, this dramatic new print is the only one to show the attack on the Sorpe Dam. The crews were briefed to attack the Sorpe by flying along the crest of the dam and dropping their mine, without bouncing or spinning, from as little as 30ft. George and Joe made a remarkable 10 bombing runs before being satisfied that they were on target. Signed by S/L George 'Johnny' Johnson DFM.
